Martin Buday Suffers First UFC Loss to Dagestani Shamil Gaziev

Slovakian MMA heavyweight fighter Martin Buday lost to the hitherto undefeated Dagestani Shamil Gaziev, representing Bahrain, at the 296th tournament of the most prestigious UFC organization.

First loss since 2017

Buday suffered his first loss in the fifth fight in the UFC, he had the longest winning streak in the heavyweight division. In his professional career, he found only the second defeater, the first since 2017. The record of the 32-year-old Nitran is 13-2.

Although Buday had already peeked into the UFC’s top 15 and Gaziev was making his debut in the organization, the odds were even. The Bahrain international has not found a killer in his career so far and has scored several valuable scalps. He improved his perfect score to 12-0, only the fourth time he looked into the 2nd round. With one exception, he finished all opponents before the limit (8 knockouts and 3 submissions).

He could not see in one eye, the doctor checked him twice

Buday and Gaziev opened the last UFC tournament of the year, the famous T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was still filling up with spectators. Gaziev, known for his quick starts, started after Buday with precise combinations of hooks and jacks. He gained confidence, the Slovak was immediately in trouble. After a minute, he tied up his opponent for the first time and pressed him to the net. However, he did not last long in his favorite position, the opponent was well prepared in terms of strength.

Gaziev continued to fire at Budy, reminded the hunter. The Slovak took cover during the opponent’s offensive, he was bleeding from the nose after only two minutes. Roh urged him to tie up his opponent, but Gaziev kept his distance. Two minutes before the end of the round, the referee called a doctor to the octagon after another series of blows from the Bahrain representative. Buday had a nasty laceration on his left eyelid, blood was running straight into his eye.

The doctor gave the green light for the match to continue. After a rejected takedown, Buday ended up on the ground, luring his opponent to him, but he didn’t take the reins here either. The Dagestani interfered and prepared the ground for the finish. He dominated in all aspects of the fight, the heavyweight from Nitra did not get to anything.

“I can’t see,” said Buday during a break. The doctor approved the continuation of the duel, but instructed the ring referee: “Be careful and watch it.”

Gaziev continued the pressure at the beginning of the 2nd round. Aiming at the injured eye, Buday tried to protect it. He wrapped up, cashed in and was passive. The referee correctly waved the end after 56 seconds.
