Microsoft fixes File Explorer issue in Windows 11 with KB5033375 cumulative update

After nearly a year, Microsoft has finally fixed an issue that caused File Explorer to open automatically and distract attention from other apps in Windows 11. This fix is rolling out with Windows 11 KB5033375 (cumulative update for December 2023).

This issue was first reported by hundreds of users in the Feedback Hub in October 2022 when Windows 11 Moment 2 was released with a redesigned file explorer. Due to this bug, Explorer suddenly opens in the foreground when performing any non-file manager related activities.

The focus shift error in File Explorer can be extremely annoying as it can happen at random intervals and in worst cases, every hour. It doesn’t matter which apps or programs you’re focused on because File Explorer automatically tries to switch focus at random intervals. This may happen in the middle of a document or presentation.

It looks scary because it may appear that your computer has been hacked and someone is trying to open the folders.
