The Netherlands has started an experiment with the sale of legally grown marijuana
For the first time, coffee shops in two cities in the south of the Netherlands are allowed to sell legally grown marijuana. The experiment will last several months, and if successful, 11 more Dutch municipalities will receive permits to sell legally grown marijuana.
Under the terms of the experiment, cafes in the cities of Tilburg and Breda are allowed to store up to 500 grams of self-grown hemp, in addition to 500 grams of hemp purchased from third-party producers.
“In the initial phase, growers, cafe owners, transporters and regulatory authorities will gain experience in the supply and sale of regulated cannabis, as well as in monitoring, safe transport and the use of the control mechanism,” the Dutch government said in a statement. This stage will last for six months, and if during this time the level of threat to public order and security does not increase, the experiment can be considered a success.
