CMA CGM Group Suspends Container Ship Trips in Red Sea Due to Attacks by Yemen’s Houthi Forces

Atlanta, United States (CNN) – CMA CGM Group, the third largest shipping company in the world, has instructed all of its container ships in the Red Sea region to temporarily stop their trips after a series of attacks on commercial ships at sea.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi forces are targeting commercial ships, claiming that the attacks are a way to pressure Israel to send aid to Gaza. The group said that any ship heading to Israel is a “legitimate target.”

As a result, the Danish shipping and logistics company Maersk suspended all shipping operations through the Red Sea on Friday, and the German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd also announced on Friday that it had implemented a three-day stop in shipping routes through the Red Sea.

In a statement on Saturday, CMA Group said it was “deeply concerned” about the recent attacks.

The French company added: “The situation is deteriorating further and concerns about safety are increasing.”

The statement continued: “As such, we have decided to issue instructions to all CMA container ships in the region that are scheduled to pass through the Red Sea to reach safe areas and to temporarily halt their journey in safe waters with immediate effect until further notice. CMA Group is taking all steps.” necessary in order to maintain transportation services to its customers.”
