Netflix’s Epic Sci-Fi “Rebel Moon” by Zack Snyder Receives Poor Reviews and Low Ratings

In just one week, the long-awaited (and feared by others) epic sci-fi will enter Netflix Rebel Moon: Part One – Born of Firein which controversial director Zack Snyder tries to make his own Star Wars with a story inspired Seven Samurai. And of course, the big-mouthed creator and streaming platform had big plans right from the start. They want to build a giant franchise around Rebel Moon, which will be supplemented not only by many Snyder cuts and the second film part, which will arrive in the spring, but there was also talk of a comic book, books, a series or a video game. In short, the creators were sure that they had a new big sci-fi world in their hands, which the audience would want to explore for a long time. But the trailers have already shown that it won’t be that simple. Because while Snyder’s die-hard fans were clapping as always, the rest of the audience was yawning in boredom. And the first reactions of reviewers show that the biggest Netflix blockbuster of the year will probably hurt us a lot.

There are currently only 24% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with a miserable 4.1 rating. This makes it Snyder’s second lowest-rated film. Only Sucker Punch has a worse rating with 22%, even though the ratings of both titles are identical. And you don’t want to start a new sci-fi saga with such poor reviews. Rebel Moon supposedly offers exactly what we have become accustomed to from Snyder in recent years – i.e. the pursuit of distinctive visuals, a ton of slow motion, or a large amount of action. So his staunchest supporters will probably be satisfied in their own way this time as well. However, Snyder puts these elements together this time in a very empty and, for many critics, tedious way.

According to them, the story is boring, uninteresting and has a style as if the screenwriters gave an artificial intelligence the request “write us a mix of Star Wars and Seven Samurai” and just waited for the result. Although Snyder tries to pretend that he has created a new big universe, he fails as a storyteller, and at the same time, anyone who is over 13 years old and has seen all the well-known series of recent years will not see anything new and original in Rebel Moon. In short, the director robs everyone around and it is not surprisingly very entertaining and exciting. Others are not too surprised that Snyder got burned with this subject years ago at Lucasfilm.

The cast, led by Sofia Boutella and Charlie Hunnam, is said to be quite nice, but the characters are so one-dimensional and unused that they don’t save much. More worthy critics then at least praise the good action, but otherwise most agree that after the end of the second part, they are more afraid than looking forward to it. But something tells me that the Netflix reviews are not too wrinkled, within two weeks it will be boasting record ratings and Snyder will be drunk on the praise of his loyal fans. But the rest of the audience will probably have to look elsewhere for a great sci-fi epic.
