It has been revealed that the Ministry of Defense paid the town approximately 2 million yen in fuel costs for the fishing boat that helped search for the crew of the US military Osprey that crashed off the coast of Yakushima.

A US military Osprey crashed off the coast of Yakushima on the 29th of last month, and seven of the eight people on board were found dead, and the search for the remaining one continues.

The Ministry of Defense had indicated its intention to compensate the 17 fishing boats that cooperated in the search at the time of the accident, including their fuel costs, but yesterday they announced that each boat would receive approximately 120,000 yen, or a total of approximately 2 million yen. The amount was paid to Yakushima Town.

It is necessary to refrain from fishing in the area around the crash site due to the search, and the Ministry of Defense plans to consider compensation for the reduced catch in the future.
