Bulgarian Minister of Justice Atanas Slavov discusses constitutional changes and Schengen membership in interview with “Panorama”

The timelines that were set in the rules for changes to the Constitution say that next week will be the second and third votes. The relocation of the Monument to the Soviet Army is 33 years late. The long farewell to the symbols of totalitarianism is one of the problems of our society. In democracies these issues have long been resolved, it is a shame that we are arguing 33 years later. This is what the Minister of Justice Atanas Slavov said in an interview with “Panorama”.

“The key for next week is the vote on constitutional changes and the state budget,” he stressed.

According to him, the problems with corruption cannot be solved only with structural reforms. “But those we have taken are extremely important so that the judges are not politically pressured, and the Prosecutor’s Office knows that it bears responsibility,” added Slavov.

He added that “putting up umbrellas for some people” will be resolved.

“The Netherlands gave the green light for our Schengen membership – this became possible thanks to these constitutional changes. They will be adopted next week. This is the message we have sent to our partners,” the Minister of Justice also commented.

The Netherlands agreed to Bulgaria becoming part of Schengen

According to him, after the adoption of the changes to the Constitution, the term of office of the current cabinet will not expire. “The goal of the government is to put Bulgaria on the map of Europe, the goals go beyond the specific decisions that are about to be taken at the moment,” he specified.
