New Study Finds Surprising Trend in Family Birthdays: Mothers, Fathers, and Children’s Birthdays Coincide More Often Than Expected

According to a new study carried out in the USA and Spain, the birthdays of mothers, fathers and their children coincide more often than previously thought.

Researchers analyzed birth data from Spain and France over different time periods and found an unexpected trend: women were more likely to give birth in the same month they were born themselves.

The overall trend, drawn from an analysis of 10 million cases, showed that the births of mothers, fathers and children coincided 4.6% more often than expected. This event has been recorded in different time periods and in different countries, confirming its stability.

The analysis also showed that a similar trend exists among siblings. Siblings were born in the same month 12.1% more often than at any other time.

As an explanation for this phenomenon, researchers assume the influence of similar socio-demographic characteristics within families. This effect is likely due to the fact that individuals with similar characteristics congregate and thus share common traits, including a preference for a certain time of year for having children.

Various factors, such as food availability and exposure to sunlight, may also contribute to the seasonality of fertility and the formation of family traditions.
