We have put behind us several weeks of stable and good winter weather, without particular amounts of precipitation.
That’s over now. Storms are expected along almost the entire Norwegian coast this weekend, and Tromsø will be hit on Saturday morning or early morning.
– There will be a solid change in weather, especially after such a long period of fine and calm weather. A large and powerful low pressure is moving in from the North Atlantic, and we have therefore sent out several danger warnings, says Ola Bakke Aashamar, meteorologist on duty at the Weather Forecasting Center for Northern Norway.
In the Tromsø region, yellow danger warnings have been issued for ice, slippery roads and difficult driving conditions.
“There is a risk of ice due to the transition to mild weather, rain that freezes on cold ground and locally freezing rain. The rain will freeze to ice on the road, on vehicles and on other objects. The precipitation will start first in the south,” says the warning.
A little cooler than expected
A danger warning for heavy snow has also been issued in the Tromsø region.
– Especially at altitudes above 200 metres, there can be a good deal of snow, between 20 and 40 centimetres, says Aashamar.
The meteorologists are not quite sure how it will be in the lowlands. Originally, sleet was expected on Saturday and rain on Sunday, but now Aashamar is opening the possibility that it could be cooler than first thought.
– The rainfall pattern over the weekend is a bit difficult to report. In outer regions, it can quickly become sleet and rain, while in higher-lying areas and inland it comes as snow. But there is a small possibility that all the precipitation could come as snow in Tromsø and along the coast, but I’m guessing that it will then come as moist snow, he says.
On Sunday, an orange danger warning has been sent out for significant avalanche danger.
– Landslides can hit some landslide-prone roads and, rarely, buildings, the warning says, among other things.
Strong wind
In addition, there will be strong winds, so strong that a danger warning has been issued for inland areas.
– There we expect strong south-easterly winds and local gusts of between 30 and 35 meters per second. Inland areas there is also the potential for strong gales, says the meteorologist.
The strongest wind seems to be Saturday morning and afternoon. In Tromsø, stiff gales are expected at their strongest, with wind gusts of up to 24 meters per second from the southeast.
Early on Sunday morning it blows again, with equally strong winds, but this is expected to calm down during Sunday afternoon.
Sunday is also the day when the highest temperatures are expected, and where the chances of a lot of rain are greatest.
– We know that there can be problems in Tromsø when it rains at the same time as there has been frost for a long time. But NVE has not issued any flood warnings and we do not expect widespread problems with stormwater in Tromsø, says Aashamar.
