Tips to Determine the Quality of Packaged Poultry: How to Distinguish Good Chicken Meat from Less Good Chicken in the Store

From time to time it happens that the quality of packaged poultry falters a bit. Fortunately, however, it is enough to engage your senses when shopping and you will no longer be “crying over your earnings” at home. How to distinguish good chicken meat from less good chicken in the store?

Color

The clearest indicator is color. Healthy, fresh and good chicken meat should be pink in color. Absolutely no bruises, bruises, cracks, no tinge of green or gray. Compare the color of the package of meat you have chosen with the others in the cooler. It is also good to know that if there are distinct fine stripes on the meat, the chicken has been fed steroids to make it grow faster. Don’t worry, such meat will not harm you, but it will be nutritionally weak.

Packaging

Do not mindlessly throw the meat into the cart, rather examine it in a little more detail. On the one hand, check the shelf life, on the other hand, check whether the packaging is not leaky or damaged in any way. This could have a very negative impact on the freshness and quality of the meat. You can also press a little on the meat, it should be springy, not too soft, not too hard. And beware of too “wet” meat. A lot of water means that the chicken has been cooled with water, not air, which is not harmful to health, but it does not add to the taste and nutrients.

Scent

If you don’t like meat, don’t hesitate to smell it. You are looking for meat with a neutral aroma. Anything that looks suspicious, definitely don’t take it.

label

You can find out a lot of interesting information on the label of “better” chickens, such as whether the chicken is organic, whether it was fed only vegetables or raised without the use of antibiotics. Of course, the more natural the breeding, the healthier, tastier and more nutritious the meat.

How to store chicken?

Raw poultry will last 1-2 days in the refrigerator. Always store it in a resealable container. If you do not have time to process it at this time, it is better to store it in the freezer, where it will last three quarters of a year to a year. You can keep cooked chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days and in the freezer for 2-6 months.
