President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated this Wednesday that his government does not want political instability south of the border and called on the Guatemalan authorities to respect the popular will and the electoral victory of the elected president, the opposition Bernardo Arévalo.
“He won the election and due to a situation of resistance to change, resistance to democracy, lack of respect for the will of Guatemalans, since they are putting obstacles so that the citizens’ mandate is not carried out,” he declared. the president in his daily press conference at the National Palace.
Without asking a question, López Obrador referred to the political situation in the neighboring nation, where the Prosecutor’s Office has requested the annulment of the results of the presidential elections, while President Alejandro Giammattei has indicated that there is “no action” that Arévalo assumes power in January.
López Obrador said that Arévalo “won by a huge advantage” and assured that his call for the Guatemalan authorities to respect his victory “is not an interventionist action.”
“It is because, first, we are brothers, neighbors; second, if the popular will is not respected in Guatemala, conflicts can arise, and they are our neighbors, they are our brothers, and we do not want there to be political instability in Guatemala, our southern border; and third, it is because in Guatemala, the majority, even in all the countries of America, is supporting the democratic process and the same is true in the world,” he stated.
“Hopefully the UN will speak out, the OAS is already asking that democracy be respected in Guatemala, and I am talking about the OAS, you can imagine the extreme nature of the actions of certain groups in Guatemala, which is not all of the people of Guatemala. “But we do want the situation to be resolved, that the will of the people of Guatemala be respected.”
