Miguel Ontiveros, lawyer for the former director of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Emilio Lozoya Austin, was confident that his client will be able to get out of jail this Friday.
Upon his arrival at the North Prison prior to the hearing where the former official will ask for his freedom, Ontiveros maintained that he has no doubts about this.
“We have full confidence in the Judicial Branch of the Federation (PJF) and we believe that today Emilio Lozoya will be free, as he should have been from the beginning, since he arrived in Mexico,” stated the lawyer.
With this, Lozoya intends to have his justified preventive detention replaced in the Odebrecht case, where he is being accused of having received alleged bribes from the Brazilian company when he was director of Pemex.
When and at what time could Emilio Lozoya be released?
Regarding a possible time when Lozoya could be released from prison, lawyer Ontiveros pointed out that this does not depend on the defense, but on Judge Aquiles Villaseñor.
“It does not depend on us, he has two years (in jail), it depends on the UMECA, they know that to wear a bracelet is not simply a call from the legal profession but it requires that the UMECA, in harmony with the court, issue the resolution in writing so that the UMECA receives it and only then, with a written resolution, do companies proceed to link with the UMECA to grant the mechanism,” he commented.
In May 2019, a federal judge issued an arrest warrant against Emilio Lozoya, for alleged acts of corruption related to the construction company Odebrecht.
On February 12, 2020, Lozoya was arrested in Malaga, Spain. And the procedures for his extradition to Mexico began. The former Pemex director arrived in the country on July 16, 2020.
On July 17, Lozoya Austin entered the North Prison.
