In the 4th symphony concert of the anniversary season, Daniele Gatti, designated chief conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, continues his examination of Robert Schumann’s work: The composer said about his First Symphony: “I wrote the symphony, if I may say, in that spring urge that will probably carry people into old age.” In the concert, the “Spring Symphony” with Beethoven’s “The Creatures of Prometheus” and Stravinsky’s “Apollon musagète” are juxtaposed with two ballet music with reference to Greek mythology.
Although Robert Schumann experienced a fruitful creative phase during his years in Dresden between 1844 and 1850 and around a third of his entire work was created on the Elbe, it took until 1858 before the Royal Musical Orchestra – today’s Saxon State Orchestra Dresden – integrated one of his symphonies into their program. But even then, Schumann’s passionate “Spring Symphony”, which the composer wrote in just four days in 1841, inspired by Schubert’s Great, was combined with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “The Creatures of Prometheus”. A constellation that Daniele Gatti revives in the 4th symphony concert of the current anniversary season.
In addition to Beethoven’s “Prometheus”, the Italian creates another reference to Greek mythology – and a little to the history of the Staatskapelle – with Igor Stravinsky’s ballet music “Apollon musagète”. The Russian composer only paid a single visit to Dresden, but during this stay in 1929 he himself took to the podium in the band to conduct his opera oratorio “Oedipus Rex”.
Daniele Gatti completed his studies as a composer and orchestra conductor at the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan. He is chief conductor of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, music director of the Orchestra Mozart Bologna and artistic advisor to the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In August 2024 he will take over the position of chief conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. He was music director of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and previously held prestigious positions at important musical institutions such as the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchester national de France, the Royal Opera House in London, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, the Zurich Opera House and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
The concert on December 19th will be recorded and broadcast on MDR Kultur and MDR Klassik from 8:05 p.m.
