Andromeda Galaxy: History of Discovery and Fascinating Facts

SPACE — On December 15, 1612, the Andromeda galaxy was seen through a telescope for the first time by a German astronomer named Simon Marius. The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is the closest large galaxy to us in the Milky Way galaxy.

The Andromeda Galaxy can be seen with the naked eye. Astronomers initially thought it was a nebula, or cloud of glowing space dust.

In fact, after Simon Marius saw it through a telescope for the first time, he still couldn’t tell it was a galaxy containing about a trillion stars. Marius was still unsure whether it was really a galaxy.

It took another 300 years before Edwin Hubble showed up and knew it was a galaxy. Source: Space.com
