Tom Egbers has had heart problems twice in the past year. The presenter is said to have been guilty of inappropriate behavior and then left NOS Sport ‘in consultation’. The stress would have had a major impact, says his wife.
“The situation is a major attack on his health,” says his wife Janke Dekker The Telegraph-Appendix WOMAN Magazine. “On April 19, he was in the hospital with heart problems. The cardiologist made a direct connection with this stressful issue.”
“In September things went wrong again and he was admitted with a heart attack,” she continues. It is not the first time that Egbers has suffered from heart problems: it also went wrong in 2019. “We deliberately kept quiet about his heart disease, because then people would shout: ‘What a pathetic thing they are doing.’ The fact is: it happened.”
The NOS stated in mid-March that Egbers would not be seen on television “in the coming months”. The decision followed a publication in de Volkskrantwhich talked about an affair Egbers had had with a colleague in the past.
Egbers is said to have slandered the woman, who had completed an internship at the NOS, to colleagues after the affair ended.
The internal investigation into the work culture at the NOS editorial staff was completed in mid-November. The broadcaster then announced that it was still in discussions with Egbers.
‘Character assassination has been committed’
According to Dekker, she and her husband are “working on it every day”. “We wake up with it and go to bed with it. Today it’s going well, yesterday it was less so. We both have psychological help. I compare the past year with a serious accident that happened to us, and we are now recovering.”
Dekker had to go in after the story de Volkskrant resign as chairman of Mores, the reporting center for misconduct in the cultural sector. She states that the couple “has been attacked in the essence of our existence”. “Character assassination has been committed. Everything was lumped together. Every nuance was lost.”
‘We received cards, emails and letters with expressions of support’
According to Dekker, the couple has also received a lot of support. “In that first week, the bell rang every hour and someone would be there with a bouquet of flowers, nice people we didn’t know at all. They came from all over the country to our home address because they thought it was so bad,” says the actress. .
“We received cards, emails and letters with very personal stories about what they had experienced in their marriage or at work. Tom’s colleagues have supported us en masse with text messages, WhatsApp messages, emails, phone calls, etc. .”
“At one point, when Tom was going through it, we counted: 153 colleagues! That is really a lot. There are still colleagues who go for a walk with Tom to talk. And some are still afraid that this will cause trouble. “
