“Yesterday’s decision to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova is of historic importance. And it is thanks to the skill of the Chancellor. In the face of Russian aggression, it gives countries hope and confidence in a future in the EU, in peace and prosperity.
But Hungary’s refusal to support could prove to be a liability for the next steps. The long accession process still offers many opportunities for blocking. Yesterday’s summit once again made it clear how necessary it is to organize the decision-making processes in the EU differently.
Majority decisions must also become the rule at intermediate steps in the enlargement process. Internal reforms are a necessary prerequisite for expansion. This clear commitment in the conclusions of the European Council is also thanks to the Federal Chancellor.
However, the fact that the EU Commission single-handedly released 10 billion euros in blocked EU funding in the immediate run-up to the EU summit leaves a bad aftertaste.”
