Maersk, one of the largest container shipping companies in the world, will no longer allow its ships to sail across the Red Sea for the time being. Two container ships were attacked there yesterday and today. Instead, the boats will now sail along South Africa.
The Red Sea is on an important shipping route between Asia and Europe. Ships can reach the Suez Canal via this sea between North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
But after the two-pronged attack, Maersk will now send its ships under Africa. Although the route is much longer, the Danes do not want to take any risks.
On Thursday, Houthi rebels attacked a Maersk ship with a missile off the coast of Yemen. The damage to the ship was limited and the crew was unharmed. But after a second incident on Friday, the shipping company no longer wants to take any risks.
