A year after the sulfurous Attache moi!, the Iberian filmmaker reunites with Victoria Abril, one of his muses. This film also marks the reunion between the director and one of the other women in his life, the actress Marisa Paredes, whom he had already directed eight years earlier in the feature film entitled Into the Darkness. In High Heels, Marisa Paredes plays Becky Del Paramo, a singer who rose to fame in the 1960s, returning to Madrid after several years abroad. There she finds her daughter, Rebeca, played by Victoria Abril, and discovers that she is married to one of her former lovers, Manuel. But just as the latter cheats on his wife, Rebeca maintains an affair with Letal, a transvestite who imitates her mother on the stage of a cabaret. When Manuel is murdered, Rebeca is immediately suspected and summoned by judge Eduardo Domínguez… who is none other than the traversti she frequents! To play this man with a complex personality, Pedro Almodovar called on the actor and singer Miguel Bosé. However, he was not the director’s first choice since initially, he thought of entrusting the role to his favorite actor, Antonio Banderas, whom he had portrayed in his four previous films. This was without counting on the ambition of the Spanish actor who declined Pedro Almodovar’s offer to film in The Mambo Kings, his first film in the United States. Great good for him since this very first role opened the doors to Hollywood and allowed him to land roles in Philadelphia, Interview with the Vampire and The Mask of Zorro.

Pedro Almodovar and Antonio Banderas: a friendship of almost 40 years
