“Lebanon Debate”
The legislative session resumed under the chairmanship of Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, and representatives began discussing the proposed rent law for non-residential places, which was approved after voting on it article by article.
The House of Representatives postponed consideration of the Judicial Independence Law due to the objection of a number of MPs to it. Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati had requested, on behalf of Minister of Justice Henry Khoury, to withdraw the Judicial Independence Law.
However, Mikati’s words were met with objection, and MP Jamil al-Sayyid responded by saying: “What you said is true, withdraw it.”
For his part, Representative Bilal Abdullah explained why the Minister of Justice does not have the right to request the restoration of the Judicial Independence Law, saying: “He previously requested the law to be withdrawn for a month, and this month extended for a year.”
Representative Abdullah had previously called for “the necessity of approving the Judicial Independence Law on the basis of electing all members of the Supreme Judicial Council, in order to consolidate and translate actual independence from political pressures and sectarian calculations.”
