World Cup race in St. Moritz was marked by several unpleasant falls, which were not avoided even by the famous names of the prestigious carousel, Elena Curtoniová and Nina Ortliebová. Skiers have now shown what injuries they suffered in Switzerland.
Italian skier Elena Curtoni had an unpleasant fall during Friday’s super-G race on the Corviglia slope. Despite the hard impact, she was able to get up immediately and reach the finish line. However, subsequent examinations showed that the specialist in speed disciplines suffered a fracture of the sacrum and an injury to the thigh muscle. She will have a break of several weeks.
She has now published a photo with crutches on her Instagram profile. “It’s not easy for me to process this situation, but I always try to see the glass as half full,” wrote the 32-year-old skier, who also showed a huge bruise on her thigh (you can access the picture with the arrow on the right).
Elena Curtoniová has completed 259 World Cup races, in which she was able to win three times and stand on the podium in the other nine. She celebrated her most recent triumph last year in St. Moritz.
Despite the injury, he also takes away valuable experience from the last race: “I had certain doubts, but I managed to remove them. I was brave and drove fast until I fell,” adds the Italian skier, who says she was lucky in her misfortune.
In addition to her, in St. Moritz injured four other racers, including her compatriot Karolina Pichler, for whom the current season is over, or Nina Ortileb. The Austrian broke her tibia and fibula.
“I had already covered the most difficult sections of the course, but three or four gates before the finish line, my legs suddenly stretched,” describes Nina Ortliebová. Her right ski got caught in the deep snow, and a hard fall and the 20th surgery of her career followed.
According to the 27-year-old athlete, it was very difficult for her in the first days after that, but now her condition is improving. In the ORF television report, she showed her leg after the operation. The images are not suitable for more sensitive people.
“If everything goes well, next season I will participate from the first race and I definitely want to be at the 2025 World Championships in Saalbach as well,” says the vice-champion of the downhill world about her immediate goals.
