The US Congress has reaffirmed its support for NATO. The alliance has been the subject of criticism in the past from former President Donald Trump. However, under President Joe Biden, NATO’s importance has increased, especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
“NATO stands firm in response to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and growing challenges around the world. The law reaffirms U.S. support for this critical alliance that is fundamental to our national security. It also sends a strong signal to authoritarian countries that the free world remains united,” said Senator Tim Kaine.
Biden has strengthened NATO during his presidency, sending more troops to Europe as a show of force against Putin’s war and expanding the alliance to include Finland and Sweden.
Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has spoken about NATO in different ways. His defenders believe the ex-president’s criticism inspired alliance member states to increase defense spending, easing the burden on the United States. But Trump’s critics say his words weaken NATO. They fear that he will abandon US obligations under the alliance’s mutual defense pact or may withdraw from the alliance altogether.
We previously wrote that the US Congress passed a bill banning the purchase of nuclear fuel from Russia.
We also reported that South Korea is helping NATO solve the weapons shortage problem.
