The American state-funded media organization Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) has obtained a video from the Ukrainian defense which allegedly shows Russian soldiers using Ukrainian prisoners of war as shields.
The video has not been verified by independent sources, and it has not been possible to date it, reports Newsweek. It is said to have been filmed near the village of Robotyne.

RFE/RL has had lawyers and people in the Ukrainian military analyze the video, and they believe the video is evidence that Russia’s army has committed war crimes against Ukrainian troops.
In the video, which RFE/RL has posted a shortened version of on YouTube, a person they believe is an armed Russian soldier can be seen walking behind a person they believe is a Ukrainian prisoner of war. The Russian appears to lead the other man in front of him so that he can hide. Other Russian soldiers follow.

The Russian soldier will then throw what looks like a grenade in the direction of a Ukrainian position. But then can see an explosion, before Ukrainian troops can be seen running away.
According to RFE/RL, the Ukrainian military has no information about the condition of the Ukrainian troops.
Possible violation of the Geneva Convention
Members of the Ukrainian military say Russia in the video is using a shield tactic called “combat reconnaissance.” The aim should be to detect Ukrainian firing positions.
Dmytro Lubinets, acting commissioner for human rights in the Ukrainian parliament, believes the video, if it turns out to be true, shows that Russia is violating the Geneva Convention.
– It is strictly forbidden to use prisoners of war in this way. After they have received official status as prisoners of war, they must stay in a specially made camp far from fighting and await exchange, says Lubinets.
