The Dutch population continues to grow, but less rapidly than in recent years. The Netherlands is expected to have 18 million inhabitants in the coming year and will reach 19 million in 2037. Statistics Netherlands reports this on the basis of the Population Forecast 2023-2070.
Population growth is mainly due to migration and because people are getting older. By 2040, a quarter of the population will be 65 years or older, compared to 20 percent now. This is due to the large baby boom after the Second World War and the increasing lifespan. After 2040, the share of people over 65 will stabilize.
This year, the Dutch population is estimated to grow by 140,000 people, 80,000 fewer than in 2022. Growth will decrease further in the coming years, to around 70,000 people annually from 2028.
Role migration
In recent years, the population has mainly increased due to migration, with a peak in 2022 due to the war in Ukraine. That year, 337,000 people moved to the Netherlands and 192,000 people left. In the coming years, immigration is expected to decrease slightly and emigration to increase, because some of the immigrants will leave again after a number of years.
By the end of this year, the Netherlands will have approximately 2.9 million inhabitants born abroad and 15 million inhabitants born in the Netherlands. Of the latter group, 2.1 million have one or two parents who were born abroad.
Births and deaths
The population is therefore also growing because lifespan continues to increase. In the corona years 2020 and 2021, life expectancy was temporarily lower, but has been increasing again since last year.
The number of births will also increase in the coming years. Women may have fewer children on average, but because the number of women of childbearing age is increasing, the number of births is also increasing. Until 2027, fewer babies are expected to be born than people will die. Between 2028 and 2039 there will be more births than deaths, and then things will reverse again.
