TRIBUNJATENG.COM, ENGLAND – Scientists warn that solar storms could have fatal consequences for life on Earth, especially rail transportation.
Therefore, train travel should start to involve tracking solar storms.
The latest research published in the journal Space Weather on Monday, December 11 2023, explains that powerful solar eruptions can cause accidents at peak times for train travel.
The storm will disrupt electrical signal stations, potentially changing train indicators from red/stop to green/going.
“This is clearly very significant from a safety perspective,” said lead author of the new research, Cameron Patterson, a physics researcher at England’s Lancaster University on Monday, December 11, 2023.
Patterson explained that his team discovered that space weather events capable of triggering train track chaos are expected to occur in the UK every few decades.
The risks to railways and other infrastructure are especially high when the sun reaches the peak of its 11-year activity cycle, as it is starting to do now.
Electrical currents from the sun can cycle and break, causing the release of particles that move along the Earth’s magnetic lines.
This activity can cause auroras, and if they are very strong they can disrupt radio signals or electrical equipment on earth.
The research computer modeled two British rail routes, namely the Preston to Lancaster line on the West Coast Main Line, and the Glasgow to Edinburgh line. The two lines are among those that use 50,000 electrically controlled signaling circuits between the tracks.
Although the UK was the focus of the study, the researchers pointed out that other jurisdictions around the world have also been heavily impacted by solar storms in the past. For example, the power outages in the Canadian province of Quebec in 1989 and the Swedish city of Malmo in 2003, each affected millions of people.
Signal switching does not necessarily cause problems. For example, if a solar storm changes a green signal to red, it will simply make a moving train stop.
However, what is worse is if the signal changes from red to green, implying the area is safe to travel in, when in reality it is not. This has the potential to cause trains to collide with each other.
On Wednesday (28/6/2023), the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) warned and predicted that a solar storm would occur in 2025.
The storm is thought to trigger interference with electronic devices and affect satellites in the atmosphere. As a result, there is the potential for disruption to the internet, cellphone signals and satellite television for months or what is called an internet apocalypse.
Information about the internet apocalypse was also widely discussed on social media X (Twitter). The post states that humans will live without the internet when the internet apocalypse occurs. (tribune/net/rep)
