EU Leaders Reach Agreement on 12th Package of Sanctions Against Russia

On Thursday, December 14, EU leaders agreed on the 12th package of sanctions against Russia.

Details: In this document, the European Council (EU summit) announced the approval of the sanctions decision: “The European Council welcomes the adoption of the 12th package of sanctions.” As is known, legal approval occurs at the level of another body – the Council of Ministers of the EU, but it can make or pre-agreed a decision on the sidelines of the summit.

In addition, the decision reports “an agreement has been reached on the Directive on the definition of criminal offenses and penalties for violations of EU restrictive measures.”

Agency Reuters with reference to European diplomats, spoke about the details of the decision. According to the agency’s interlocutors, the text of the sanctions was agreed upon earlier this week; Austria did not give its final approval until late Thursday evening. Austria was dissatisfied with the fact that Ukraine included the Austrian Raiffeisen Bank International in the list of international sponsors of the war.

Information about the agreement on a new sanctions package was also confirmed by Radio Liberty editor Rikard Jozwiak. However, according to him, this package has not been formally adopted; this will happen in the coming days. Jozwiak notes that the EU will try to agree on another package of sanctions against the Russian Federation before the second anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Let us remind you: On Tuesday it was reported that EU ambassadors were unable to reach an agreement on the 12th package of EU sanctions against Russia because of Austria’s position by Raiffeisen Bank.

Now Raiffeisen is one of the most important financial channels in which Russian businesses carry out transactions in dollars and euros. Thanks to this, the bank receives huge incomefrom which it then finances the budget of the aggressor state with its taxes.
