Bulgarian Counterfeiters: The Most Skilful in the World?

Are Bulgarian money counterfeiters the most skillful in the world? This was one of the main questions in a 10-minute report on ZDF television, which traced the path of forged euro banknotes from Bulgaria, bgonair.bg reported.

At the beginning, the presenter recalls that in just one year, 27,000 counterfeit banknotes were confiscated in Germany, and no one knew how many more remained unnoticed. With this fake money, jewelry, luxury goods and expensive cars are bought, and their tracks lead to Bulgaria, it was said in the report, DW reported.

The main role in these 10 TV minutes is played by Tamer Bakiner, whom the authors present as an economic detective, knowledgeable and Bulgarian. In the neighborhood near the Munich station, Bakiner meets a man who promises him fake money from Bulgaria. The reporter goes to Sofia, where, according to him, counterfeiters are particularly active. The report recalls that the Bulgarian authorities are also active – and shows footage of searches and the discovery of a printing press for counterfeit banknotes.

Kristiyan Goryanov, head of the “Organized Crime” department at the Ministry of the Interior, also appeared in front of the camera of Second German Television, who said: We have some of the best counterfeiters of money and documents in the world.

In Sofia, the undercover reporter finally manages to meet a forger, who assures him that he is one of the best in Bulgaria and offers him fake 200 euro banknotes – for 40 euro each. According to the forger, his notes corresponded to about 70% of the real ones, only the quality of the paper was slightly different. The counterfeiter emphasizes that there are no better notes anywhere in the world and invites the reporter into a car, where he clearly shows him that the fake 200 euro banknote passes the test with the usual scanning pencil in supermarkets. The Bulgarians offer the potential buyer 5 million euros in 200 banknotes.

The ZDF reporter takes the sample and hands it over to the Bulgarian police, where Kristian Goryanov confirms that the quality of the forgery is good. According to him, these banknotes were printed until 2018, but their production was already stopped.

The authors of the report also take the banknote to the German Central Bank. Specialists there found that the fake is easily recognizable by the contours of the watermark. The Bulgarian fake banknote also reached a specialist at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, who added that these bills are something old – in Europe recently hundreds of such banknotes appeared every month – and that they were certainly printed more than 10 years ago.

The banknote, having traveled such long distances, will be analyzed by the German authorities and the prosecutor’s office.
