Tesla Recall: NHTSA Warns of Increased Collision Risk Due to Autopilot Issues

IT INCREASES THE RISKS – The Tesla had to issue a recall for more than 2 million cars in the United States due to problems related toAutopilot. As stated in a warning issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “there may be an increased risk of collision” in cases where drivers abuse the assisted driving or they don’t realize when it doesn’t work properly. The recall involves all models of the Tesla range (Model S, Model X, Model Y and Model 3) and will be resolved via the internet (OTA) with an update performed remotely, without the need to go to the workshop. Tesla agreed to update its system to address the issue, “although it disagrees with the agency’s analysis,” NHTSA said.

SAFETY FIRST – Thanks to a two-year investigation that examined 322 crashes, the US Highway Safety Authority found that Autopilot “may provide inadequate controls over driver engagement and use that may lead to a predictable improper use of the system”. The agency will now monitor the effectiveness of the fixes the manufacturer makes to its software. Automated technology, we read in the NHTSA note, “holds great promise for improve safety, but only when used responsibly; Today’s action is an example of improving automated systems by prioritizing safety.”

THE RESPONSIBILITY LIES WITH THE DRIVER – Tesla’s Autopilot has been at the center of several investigations by the American government and various complaints by the media for improper uses or vulnerability. There has also been no shortage of legal actions, which have accused the system of several accidents, some of which were fatal. On the other hand, Tesla has always emphasized that its Autopilot should be used by “a fully attentive driver, with hands on the wheel”, as stated on its website. Although it is a system of level 2 driving assistance, the name Autopilot has often been deemed misleading, as it would mislead customers into thinking that cars can drive themselves. The software update will increase controls and warnings to further encourage the driver to keep their attention on the road and keep their hands on the wheel.
