Greta Gerwig, the director of last summer’s blockbuster movie “Barbie”, will be the next head of the Cannes Film Festival jury, the organizers of the festival announced on Thursday.
The 40-year-old director will take over the baton from the Swede Ruben Østlund, whose jury led by this year awarded the Palme d’Or to the drama “Anatomy of a Fall”.
Gerwig will be the first female American cinematographer to hold the position, organizers said in a statement.
The American director will be the youngest head of the jury since 1966, when the then 31-year-old Sophia Loren was in this position.
Gerwig will also be the first woman in this position since 2018, when the jury was headed by Cate Blanchett.
In addition to “Barbie”, Gerwig also directed the films “Lady Bird” (“Lady Bird: Time to Fly”) and “Little Women”.
Currently, she is working on the adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia” for the streaming platform “Netflix”. Gerwig has also starred in more than two dozen films herself.
