EU Council Decision: Ukraine and Moldova to Open Accession Negotiations with the European Union

Despite the pessimism prevailing in the morning, the leaders of the European Union have managed to agree on the start of negotiations for joining the bloc with Ukraine and Moldova. This means that the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbáns, has withdrawn the previously expressed objections that Kyiv has not fully fulfilled the requirements set by the European Union.

The leaders’ meeting in Brussels continues with discussions on financial aid to Ukraine and amendments to the bloc’s multi-year budget, however, the decision to start accession negotiations can be considered a significant breakthrough.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, called the EU’s decision a victory for Ukraine and the whole of Europe.

“History is made by those who tirelessly fight for freedom,” Zelensky emphasizes.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa described it as a historic moment for the European Union, Ukraine and Latvia.
