Almost 48,000 People Became Dutch Citizens Through Naturalization in 2023, Mostly Syrians

Dec 14, 2023 at 8:32 AM Update: 14 minutes ago

Until December 1, almost 48,000 people have become Dutch citizens through naturalization this year, reports the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Most applicants were of Syrian nationality. In the same period last year, more than 44,000 people were naturalized as Dutch citizens.

The increase is a result of the number of migrants who came to the Netherlands in previous years. If they have resided legally in the Netherlands for three or five years and meet a number of other conditions, they can submit a naturalization application.

This year it concerns almost 35,000 adults and around 13,000 children. A large number of applicants had a permit to stay with a family member or an asylum permit. Persons aged 18 or older renounce their other nationality after naturalization.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) processed a total of more than 49,000 naturalization applications this year. In 2022 this was more than 51,000 and in 2021 almost 56,000. In 2019, the IND made a decision on approximately 27,000 naturalization applications.

If the IND’s decision on a naturalization request is positive, a proposal to grant Dutch citizenship will be submitted to the king. He then makes the formal decision.

The applicant will then receive an invitation from the municipality for a naturalization ceremony. After this ceremony, the applicant is officially a Dutch citizen, which means, among other things, that he or she can now vote in all Dutch elections and fulfill all public functions.
