NNA – “Call of the Nation” newspaper wrote: Opposition representatives are participating in the general parliamentary session today, and their sights are on approving the law proposal related to extending the term of the Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun. As for tomorrow’s cabinet session, it will discuss an agenda that does not contain an item related to postponing General Aoun’s dismissal for 6 months. Which means that the issue of the army commander was raised first in Nejmeh Square, amid a decision by the opposition not to back down from it, even if it seems that talk of his passing in the Grand Serail session tomorrow is still worrying. Will caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati back down from presenting a government decision to postpone General Aoun’s dismissal from outside the agenda of the ministerial session? Note that the government decision is of questionable legal force, and blocks the way for parliamentary legislation that possesses such force.
While awaiting the clarification of Mikati’s position, important data emerged yesterday, which well-informed sources described to “Nidaa al-Watan” as “triangular pressures.” These three pressures are: “Great diplomatic pressure from the Five-Year Committee for Lebanon, which discovered the hidden plot, contrary to the promises that were given to it, but when it learned what was happening, it began communicating with those concerned to say that it would not accept anyone tampering with this issue. Bkerke is under strict pressure while she is playing a major role and considers that what is happening is directed against her. As for the third pressure, the sovereign powers, especially the Lebanese Forces, are exerting great pressure in this direction.
In this context, it was highlighted yesterday that the Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Boutros Al-Rai, received the Saudi Ambassador Walid Al-Bukhari for an hour in Bkerke. “Nidaa Al Watan” learned that the timing of the visit is intended to send a clear message in all directions. The Saudi ambassador wanted to say that his country, along with the Five-Year Committee, stands behind Patriarch Al-Rahi in the battle not to empty the military leadership and elect a sovereign and reformist president. After the Patriarch spoke about the importance of extending the extension of the army commander, Al-Bukhari said clear words in support of what the Patriarch is doing in the army leadership file, and conveyed his country’s appreciation for the role played by Joseph Aoun and his protection of Lebanon’s stability and security and the preservation of the work and regularity of the military institution in the most difficult stage of Lebanon’s history. While he stressed that the issue of the presidency is a Lebanese matter, he stressed not to go into presidential names, but in the security file he was clear that shaking the stability of the Lebanese army and security would lead to the spread of chaos, and therefore the position of the countries following the Lebanese affairs is not to allow tampering with Lebanon’s security and exporting chaos. Therefore, Al-Bukhari assured Al-Rai of supporting all of his positions, including the need for representatives to carry out their duties to save the military institution and elect a new president of the republic.
In information from diplomatic sources to “Call of the Nation,” the five-member committee reaffirmed to those concerned “the necessity of extending the extension of the army commander’s term and not seizing the opportunity of the end of Joseph Aoun’s term for more vacuums that please some parties and complicate the crisis further.” The sources said, “Lebanon faces many complications soon, and it must urgently fill the gaps.” There are entitlements after the Gaza War that strongly include Lebanon, which requires official Lebanon to be strongly present in them.
What about today’s parliament session? Information reported about a “principled agreement” between the “Democratic Gathering” and “National Moderation” blocs and MP Adeeb Abdel Masih from the “Tajdid” bloc, to merge the three proposals related to the army commander and officers into “a unified formula for extending all ranks by one year in the various security services.” .
On the eve of the session, the presenter of President Nabih Berri’s NBN television news bulletin stated that regarding the issue of extending the term of the army commander, “the government remains the right… but if it hesitates to prevent a vacuum in the military institution, the House of Representatives will say, ‘It is up to me.’” ».
As for the basic projects on the agenda of today’s parliamentary session, which are: “Capitol Control,” the “Sovereign Fund,” and the independence of the judiciary, they may not pass, according to parliamentary estimates.
Regarding the government session, a ministerial source told “Nidaa Al-Watan” that the ministers are waiting for Mikati’s return from Geneva in order to be informed of his decision regarding the clause postponing General Aoun’s dismissal from service, while media circles close to Mikati reported that the government session is on schedule tomorrow. And that the clause of postponing the dismissal is “required” by a legal study.
In a press conference, the head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, called on President Najib Mikati to postpone the presentation of the army commander item in tomorrow’s ministerial session. He said: “If it does not pass in Parliament, he has time and “then it will be proposed.” My best hope is that Mikati does not bear this responsibility, because it “destroys houses, if not ruins an entire country.”
