American Ian Snyder from California went for a walk alone on the island of Oahu in Hawaii last week. When the 34-year-old father of three reached ‘the hardest part’ of the path, things went wrong. He doesn’t remember exactly what happened, but he fell down.
Broken arm
“I’m incredibly happy to be here,” Snyder said yesterday during a press conference where he met the emergency workers who came to save him. He has a broken arm and a swollen eye, but otherwise not much wrong.
“When I heard I had fallen 1,000 feet, I couldn’t believe I had survived,” he said.
Snyder had no idea where he was after falling hundreds of feet. Nor did he know whether it was day or night. “I remember I was near a stream. I dragged myself over there and lay down between two rocks.”
Because his arm was broken, he scooped water to his mouth with his other hand.
Photos on social media
When Snyder didn’t return from his walk, his family called the police. Because the American had posted about his journey on social media, rescuers were able to locate him more easily. “This is the best walk of my life,” Snyder had captioned one of the photos.
He was finally found after three days by a rescue helicopter. The rescuer who first saw him said during the press conference that he too could not believe that someone could survive such a fall. “Falling from three hundred meters is no small feat,” he said.
Never walk alone again
Snyder was released from the hospital after three days. He says he has learned one thing from the incident: he will never go on a long walk alone again.
