(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Han Seong-gan = Research has shown that multiple sclerosis (MS), an incurable central nervous system disease, shows symptoms such as depression, constipation, urinary tract infection, and sexual dysfunction five years before the onset.
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system sporadically attacks the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. Main symptoms include balance, movement, vision, language, sensation, sexual function, urination and defecation disorders, and cognitive impairment. There is currently no cure. The prevalence rate is overwhelmingly higher in women, four times higher than in men.
HealthDay News reported that a research team led by Professor Celine Roifre of Neurology at the Sorbonne University School of Medicine in France compared and analyzed the medical records of 20,174 people diagnosed with MS and 54,790 people without MS. reported on the 13th.
The research team also compared the medical records of MS patients with the medical records of 30,477 patients with Crohn’s disease and 7,337 patients with lupus, the same autoimmune disease.
The research team examined the medical records of MS patients to see if they had a history of other diseases five years before and after their MS diagnosis and compared them with a control group without MS.
The results showed that MS patients had a 22% higher rate of depression, a 50% higher rate of constipation, a 38% higher rate of urinary tract infection, a 21% higher rate of bladder infection, and a 47% higher rate of sexual dysfunction than other people.
Of course, not everyone who suffers from these diseases will develop MS, but the research team emphasized that it will help understand the biological mechanisms that form in the body before MS symptoms begin.
The research team added that these diseases were also found to be frequent in patients with Crohn’s disease and lupus.
The results of this study were published in the latest issue of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) journal ‘Neurology’.
