Storms with strong winds and a lot of precipitation in the form of rain are expected over more or less the entire country over the next few days.
The national media refer to the rainfall amounts for an “atmospheric river”, i.e. a low pressure system that brings with it a lot of warm air and water vapor from the Atlantic Ocean.
It is Westland and Nordland in particular that will get the worst storms and the largest amounts of rain. In Bergen, temperatures of 11 degrees are expected, while Bodø can expect 50-60 millimeters of rain from Friday to over the weekend.
Will make a decision on Thursday
On-duty meteorologist Martin Granerød tells Nordlys that Troms looks set to release the worst storm and the strongest wind. Nevertheless, there will be a fresh breeze and a relatively high amount of rain – on top of frost, ice and snow-covered roads. A recipe that is known to produce both potholes, slippery roads and local flooding.
– Danger warnings will probably be sent out for further south in the country, but for Troms’ part, we will make a decision during Thursday on whether to send out a danger warning before the impending mild weather, he says.
– It is likely that it will be slippery along the roads in any case, he adds. In total, Tromsø can expect around 30–40 millimeters of rain from Sunday to Monday. The storm also arrives somewhat later in our latitudes than in the rest of the country.
May change
– Thursday looks like it will be another cold and nice day, with temperatures between three and eight degrees below zero. But later in the afternoon on Friday it clouds over and the temperatures rise. On Saturday, it will be plus degrees and alternate between rain and sleet, while on Sunday it looks like it will change to direct rain, but not as much as further south, says Granerød.
However, this is what the weather looks like right now. The forecasts can still change.
– Right now it looks like Troms and Tromsø are far enough north to escape the strong westerly wind. Especially on Sunday, the low pressure is moving north, and then the speed and movement of the low pressure will be decisive for how the weather will be in your area, says Granerød.
