Norwegian Citizen Killed in Ukraine: Ministry of Foreign Affairs Confirms – Updated

UPDATED: Harstad Tidende has been in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday afternoon. Press spokesperson Siri Svendsen confirms that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware that a Norwegian citizen has been killed in Ukraine.

– We are now working on getting formal confirmation from the local authorities. UD is in contact with next of kin. Due to the duty of confidentiality, we cannot provide further details in the case, says Svendsen.

Ibestad mayor Jim Kristiansen was notified of the death at 2pm on Tuesday.

– We do not know the circumstances surrounding the death. We have to follow up with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday morning, Kristiansen said last night.

It was iHarstad who first reported the case.

The municipality was informed of the death through next of kin.

– The next of kin have been offered all the assistance and help they may need. We stand up with a crisis team, a psychologist and a doctor if they need it, says the mayor.

Ibestad is a small municipality with 1,300 inhabitants where everyone knows everyone.

– The death has a strong impact on society. It is difficult to receive a message that such a young person has passed away in such a way, says Kristiansen.

The mayor currently has no information about when the death occurred, whether the man was a combatant in the war or whether he was in Ukraine as a volunteer in some other way.

– I do not know the conditions in Ukraine. I unfortunately don’t know when things have happened, said the mayor on Wednesday night.

Relatives, friends and acquaintances have lit candles at the town hall, where the flag will be flown at half-mast on Wednesday.
