Botafogo Carioca Championship Preparations 2024: From B-Team to Professional Squad

The exit to the Botafogo At the beginning of the Carioca Championship, there will be a mix of players from the professional squad with players from the B team, the under-23 team. According to Ferj regulations, a club can use the reserve team in the first four rounds of the Campeonato Carioca. Botafogo intends to take advantage of all the time possible to extend the pre-season with a focus on the preliminary phase of the Libertadores.

But how is the under-23? Officially, Botafogo does not provide information about the team. But what is known is that the category has no competitions to compete in 2024 – the Brasileirão de Aspirantes, the official CBF competition for the category, ended in 2022, and few players continue in it within the club’s project of having a link with the Professional casting and serving the cast. At the moment, the team is on vacation and will perform again on January 3rd.

Even without having an official calendar, Botafogo maintains a B team – with a much smaller squad than in the past. These are players who have already reached the age limit for the under-20 team, but have no space for the main team. The squad mixes training at the Nilton Santos annex field with CEFAT, in Nitéroi, and holds friendly matches throughout the year.

There are evaluations and exchanges of reports between the B team committees and the professional cast on a weekly basis. Players who stand out in the under-23 team are called to join the main team’s training sessions and, perhaps, may be involved in games – the most recent example was that of midfielder Newton, who came onto the field against Cruzeiro in the Brasileirão.

The 23-year-old athlete arrived at Alvinegro last year from Jacuipense. With a loan contract with a fixed purchase and a low salary – a format similar to all athletes who go through the project – Newton was kept at the club even without an official calendar because he had stood out. With Tiago Nunes, he was called to join training, he was pleased and entered the field.

The tendency is that, in addition to players over the age of 20, athletes are training who will not be in the São Paulo Junior Football Cup, which will also be in January.

The issue is that most of the athletes considered to be on team B are on loan to other clubs (see list below, according to the Registration and Transfer Information Bulletin – BIRA). Internal information shows that the category should not have longevity at the club.

In the current cast, as determined by the ge, are goalkeeper Gabriel Toebe, about to be loaned to Avenida-RS; defender Esteban Espinosa, contract until 12/31; right-back Vitor Marinho, midfielder Wendel Lessa, on his way to Náutico, midfielders Dudu and Juninho, and attackers Darius Lewis, with a contract until 12/31, Iago André and Valentín Adamo – the latter signed for the professional.
