Israel- Hamas war: Immediate ceasefire in Israel-Hamas war (ceasefire in Gaza), India voted in favor of the UN General Assembly draft resolution demanding the unconditional release of hostages. Egypt presented at an emergency special session at the United Nations on Tuesday. The draft resolution was approved by the 193-member UN General Assembly. News agency PTI reported that 153 countries supported the resolution while 23 countries abstained and 10 voted against. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said that a large-scale humanitarian crisis is taking place here. India therefore voted in favor of the resolution adopted by the General Assembly, she added.
“There was a terrorist attack in Israel on October 7, and there is concern about the hostages at that time. There was a huge humanitarian crisis and a huge loss of life, especially women and children’s problems, and a huge loss in this war. Here is the issue of international monitoring. In all cases, humanitarian law must be followed, and a peaceful and lasting solution to the long-term Palestinian problem is a two-state solution. Efforts are being made to find out,” Ruchira was quoted as saying by Cambodian news agency ANI.
“The challenge is to strike the right balance,” Ruchira Kamboge said citing the complexity of the issues facing the international community and Article 99 of the United Nations Charter. “We therefore welcome this resolution. The current responsibility of the international community is to find a common ground on the multiple challenges that Gaza is currently facing,” she said.

The resolution, sponsored by Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Palestine, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, particularly those related to the protection of civilians.
The resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access.
But the resolution was passed without naming Hamas. Therefore, the US proposed to amend the draft resolution.

It abstained from a resolution introduced in October calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and unhindered humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip. The resolution drafted by Jordan called for immediate, continuous, adequate and uninterrupted access to essential goods and services to the people of the Gaza Strip.
The vote at the UNGA came days after the 15-nation UN Security Council adopted a resolution. After the permanent member United States vetoed the text, it would call for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.
The UNSC resolution, tabled by the United Arab Emirates with the support of more than 90 member states, received 13 votes in favor, with the United Kingdom abstaining.
On October 7, 1,200 people, including 33 children, were killed and thousands injured in a terrorist attack in Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 18,205 Palestinians have been killed so far. 70 percent of them are women and children. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also reported that approximately 49,645 people were injured.
