Entertainment Software Association Cancels Electronic Entertainment Expo – E3 Officially Dead

It’s time to squeeze a tear. The Entertainment Software Association announced this afternoon that there will be no more Electronic Entertainment Expo. E3 is officially dead.

The largest trade show of the gaming industry was held in Los Angeles, but it could not adapt to the changing market and the demands of the big video game companies. In 2020, the exhibition was canceled due to the pandemic, in 2021 it was fully digital, last year was completely canceled, and this year’s attempt with the organizer of PAX, ReedPop, also failed. Allegedly due to little interest from publishers.

“After more than two decades of hosting the event that served as the central showcase for the US and global video game industry, the Entertainment Software Association has decided to end E3,” stated ESA President and CEO Stanely Pierre-Louis for The Washington Post.

“We know that the entire industry, gamers and creators have a lot of passion for E3. We share this passion. We know it’s hard to say goodbye to such a popular event, but it’s the right thing to do given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners.”

Pierre-Louis also pointed out the changes. E3 seems to have broken the neck of publishers who have the ability to host own individual presentations. In this way, it is probably alluding to the online formats of Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and other companies. Since covid, these are more numerous and cheaper for publishers than the Los Angeles fair. Despite this, Gamescom in Cologne, which is more focused on visitors, continues to thrive.
