The Impact of Algorithms on Social Media and the Need for a Change in Technical Implementation

Not very smart. Then they will come up with a different technical implementation.

I would rather focus on the algorithms that play the user to capture the most attention.

In the past on Facebook you only saw the people you followed on a linear time scale and at some point you simply ran out of new content. Nowadays, algorithms search for all kinds of things to keep you busy, and you often can’t even avoid it: I quit Facebook for that reason. Because I just wanted to follow people and not all that other junk. Facebook used to be super relaxed, you could see what your friends were experiencing every day. Now it’s full of shouty “influencers” that I don’t like.

They would be better off banning this, or at least mandating that there must be an option to view the content without algorithmic recommendations. Instead of focusing on the pure mechanics of infinite scrolling which simply has little to do with it and is more of a symptom of the problem.

PS: Instagram has retained that old dynamic for a long time, but has also fallen into garbage since the competition with TikTok, although you can still click on “following” instead of “for you”, then you only get to see what you want to see. But they make that as difficult as possible, you have to choose it every time and you can’t turn off those “reels” completely.
