One of Brazil’s stadiums witnessed a tragic incident in which a young player was killed and 6 others were injured, after a huge lightning bolt struck the field during a cup match.
The incident occurred inside a stadium in the city of Santo Antonio da Platina, in the northeast of the state, where a video of the tragedy was circulated by fans.
The victim was identified as Caio Henrique de Lima Goncalves, 21 years old, who was a midfielder for Atlético Gabirense and represented his town in the Regional Amateur Football Cup.
The municipality of Jabeira issued a statement expressing its sadness and declared official mourning over the death of the young player.
Local media reported that Caio Henrique was taken to the hospital after the lightning strike, which occurred on December 10, but he died shortly after.
Terrifying video footage recorded moments after the lightning strike shows the stadium filled with injured players and officials quickly racing to get them to safety for medical treatment.
Five of the six injured players are still in a local hospital under medical observation due to burns on their bodies, while the sixth player with serious injuries was transferred to a regional hospital.
