Korean Skater Hwang Dae-heon Threatened by Chinese Fans at Short Track World Cup in Beijing

▲ Short track national team member Hwang Dae-heon. Yonhap News It was reported that national team member Hwang Dae-heon (23) was threatened by Chinese fans during the third round of the Short Track World Cup held in Beijing, China last week. The 3rd competition of this Short Track World Cup was held in Beijing, China from the 8th to the 10th.

Dae-Heon Hwang felt uneasy at his lodgings after returning from the first day of the 2023-2024 International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup 3rd Competition held on the 8th.

Chinese fans who came to the dorm room mocked Hwang Dae-heon for being disqualified, and even mentioned the name of Lin Xiaojun (Chinese/Korean name Lim Hyo-jun). Afterwards, Hwang Dae-heon also missed the men’s 5000m relay final.

The Korea Skating Federation protested to China, the host country, and this was resolved by erecting guards when the athletes moved around.

An official from the skating federation said, “We complained to the ISU. But since the competition was in progress, I had no choice but to be cautious,” he said. ▲ Lin Xiaojun (Lim Hyo-jun) of the Chinese short track team. Yonhap News short track team coach Ahn Jung-hyun said at the media day for the 4th competition of the 2023-2024 ISU Short Track World Cup held at the Mokdong Indoor Ice Rink in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul on the 12th, “After the race on the 9th, an unpleasant incident occurred. “There were Chinese fans waiting for Hwang Dae-heon at the national team’s dormitory,” he explained. “Hwang Dae-heon had a bad feeling while waiting for the elevator, and something unpleasant happened while waiting and going up.”

He continued, “Something happened that shouldn’t have happened. “I think we should accept the booing at the stadium, but coming to the dorms and chasing the players around as if they were terrorists is a serious problem,” he added.

Dae-heon Hwang was unexpectedly disqualified and lost his medal even though he finished first in the men’s 1000m at the 2022 Beijing Olympics this year. In the 1500m that followed, he continued to lead and finally won the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Lin Xiaojun, who has become a naturalized Chinese citizen, will not participate in this year’s Short Track World Cup due to injury. As a result, the domestic match between Lin Xiaojun and Hwang Dae-heon was canceled again.

Coach Ahn said, “We have officially confirmed that Lin Xiaojun will not be able to participate in this tournament due to injury. He said, “He will focus on the game without worrying about specific players and will try to achieve good results.”
