Electric Motorcycles and Scooter Trends at EICMA 2023: Yadea Kemper, Zero Motorcycles DSR/X, Ultraviolette F77, and More!

In November, Milan hosted the world’s most influential motorcycle exhibition EICMA for the 109th time, which at the time of its opening was called the “Olympics of passion and mobility on two wheels”. The exhibition offered 2,036 brands (a historic record for the event), representing 45 countries.

The exhibition is usually attended by industry professionals and a huge number of motorcycle enthusiasts. The number of visitors exceeded 560 thousand, which confirms the 2023 exhibition as the best in the history of EICMA. The significant increase in participants and visitors points to the increasing importance of individual mobility. As electric motor technologies enter the market, the boundaries between bicycles, scooters and motorcycles are rapidly being broken down. The year 2023 marks a significant turning point in the motorcycle industry, when electric becomes a viable choice in the conservative motorcycle industry.

Trends

Electric mopeds and scooters are also well known in Latvia, but in Asia they have already taken over the majority of the market due to their low maintenance costs. Since electric scooters do not differ significantly in terms of their technical parameters or are limited by legislation, manufacturers in Milan tried to surprise with the design of scooters. It is the most significant trend in this segment that design becomes the main choice magnet. Rollers have 2 main, but completely opposite design directions – a modernized design from the 50s-60s or a futuristic cosmic direction.

Lambretta stand at the EICMA exhibition

Italian manufacturer Lambretta, celebrating its 77th anniversary, presents its first electric scooter Elettra in modern colors. The Lambretta Elettra is designed as a vehicle for urban use, but offers sporty and tapered lines that immediately recall the classic styling features of the legendary Lambretta. The fixed front fender is a distinctive feature of Lambretta scooters.

Horwin Sementi 0

Austrian and Chinese Horwin, attracting the famous motorcycle builder Arjan van der Boom, surprised the visitors with a futuristic design, on the basis of which real models are developed. In 2024, Horwin plans to start production of the Senmenti 0 electric scooter, which is built on the basis of the Senmenti X concept and promises a range of 300 km on a single charge. Horwin also presented the new “Project Horizon” concept, which in a few years will have a practical and stylish urban mobility solution, filled with the latest technology.

VMoto APD concept

VMoto unveiled its first maxi scooter concept, the APD, developed in collaboration with the Pininfarina Design Center’s aerodynamics research, spending hours in the wind tunnel has resulted in the final design that Vmoto likes to call ‘Sculpted By The Wind’. If BMW surprised a couple of years ago with its CE 04 futuristic scooter, then there were already dozens of scooters of this style in Milan!

Motorcycles

If the urban moped and scooter segment has developed electric vehicles in the last decade, electric motorcycles are a bigger challenge for designers to get power and distance while maintaining compact dimensions and light weight. The 2023 Milan exhibition showed that we are very close to the electric motorcycle revolution!

The most attention at the exhibition was attracted by the company YADEA, which continues to take on the role of the leader of the industry, surprising with technical parameters, presenting the electric motorcycle Yadea Kemper.

Yadea Kemper

First, Yadea announced that charging the Type2 from 0 to 80 percent will take just ten minutes thanks to its “high-performance battery pack,” while a peak output of 40 kW puts it in line with many of the middleweight 55 hp ICE roadsters currently on the market. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The maximum speed is 160 km/h.

The Convenience Package features Yadea Smart Assistant, which includes the Yadea app, a 7-inch smart TFT dashboard, and 1080P built-in cameras provide stabilized video recordings and automatically save pre- and post-impact footage in the event of a collision.

Even if Yadea Kemper will not implement all these technologies in the 2024 model, this is the direction in which other motorcycle manufacturers are also working. 10 minute charge, excellent acceleration and speed equals and surpasses powerful internal combustion engine motorcycles.

Zero Motorcycles DSR/X

The world’s leading electric motorcycle manufacturer from California, Zero Motorcycles, demonstrated its wide range of electric motorcycles this year. Adventure type motorcycle DSR/X alone shows that in the production of electric motorcycles there are not only urban scooters or short-distance sprinters, but also travelers with a distance of 250 km without exaggerating the battery sizes.

At the EICMA show, several popular brands showed off their powerful ‘bombs’ that are being tested in the FIM Enel MotoE World Championship. For example, the Ducati V21L electric motorcycle is capable of developing 110 kW (147 hp) and 140 Nm of torque, reaching a maximum speed of 275 km/h.

Ultraviolette F77

The world already knows about the Indian brand’s Ultraviolette F77, a fully electric motorcycle that can achieve a range of 310 km with its patented battery technology. Its European price of 9,000 to 11,000 euros makes it a particularly attractive motorcycle!

But look at the factory racing version of the Ultraviolette F99 that looks like it wants to devour anyone who lays eyes on it. Designed with active aerodynamic capabilities in mind, the electric motor and battery are liquid-cooled and capable of a maximum power of up to 90 kW (120 hp) and a top speed of 265 km/h!

Maeving RM1S

Undeniably, the big companies compete by showing off their muscles – more capacious batteries, more powerful engines, lighter frames, etc. At the same time, there are manufacturers who pay more attention to design using widely available technologies. Such an interesting solution is the Maeving coffee racer from the British company. An elementary 30s-style city car. Stylish!

Gowow Ori

I would like to end the description of the Milan exhibition with the most important trend of 2023 – electric cross-country motorcycles. It seems that in 2023, no motorcycle manufacturer has survived without including the cross-country segment in its product range. Starting with leading companies like Honda, Yamaha, and ending with scooter manufacturers or small niche factories, they offer their cross-country motorcycle solutions. They are mostly light motorcycles for non-professionals. Easy-to-use, easy-to-maneuver, unobtrusive, has created a whole new army of users for whom this is the first motorcycle for everyday and leisure use. In the picture, Gowow Ori motorcycle with the most common parameters in this class – 100 km/h speed and 100 km distance. And the price is within 6000 euros.
