The Power of Herbal Remedies: Reducing Children’s Coughs with Ivy Leaves and Thyme

General Chairperson of the Association of Indonesian Traditional Medicine and Herbal Medicine Developers (PDPOTJI) Dr. (Cand) Dr. Inggrid Tania M.Si (Herbal) said that a combination of herbs such as ivy leaves and thyme leaves can reduce coughs in children because they have anti-inflammatory properties.

“The combination of ivy leaves (moringa leaves) and thyme to treat phlegmy coughs because of its strong anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties, can help relieve inflammation of the bronchi which often occurs in children,” said Ingrid at the PDPOTJI Anniversary event which was attended online at Jakarta, Sunday.

Ingrid said the use of ivy leaves and thyme can reduce inflammation in children’s coughs which are allergies, or which cause asthma due to hyper inflammation. In clinical trials, this combination has been proven safe and effective for symptomatic therapy for dry coughs and phlegm.

Ivy leaf extract or the Latin name Hedera Felix, has a natural mucolytic role which functions to thin phlegm. Meanwhile, thyme leaf extract is widely used traditionally and modernly to suppress inflammation and help expel excessive phlegm.

The essential oil content of thyme, said Inggrid, also has antiviral properties to inhibit the reproduction of viruses. Other herbs that have been surveyed globally to reduce coughs are ginger, chamomile, echinacea and mint leaves and honey.

“For coughs, use mint leaves, if you have a cold, echinacea is widely used, even though it is not from Indonesia, it is widely used in Europe and the Mediterranean, so now there are many herbal products that contain this ingredient, other herbs that are widely used for coughs and colds, for example thyme, ginger etc. besides garlic, shallots,” he said.

The use of these two herbal ingredients also needs to be combined with other herbs that strengthen the immune system and to reduce the use of antibiotics, one of which is ekinacea purpurea.

Echinacea purpurea is efficacious in preventing secondary infections caused by bacteria which often accompany mild viral infections. When herbs with ekinase are given early, they can prevent the growth of bacteria in children.

“The combination of herbs plus herbs that are immunomodulatory means that children can recover more quickly, whether for example due to viral infections or non-infectious causes such as allergies and we prevent secondary bacterial infections from occurring so we avoid the use of antibiotics,” he explained.

Ingrid said that globally in recent years parents have become increasingly knowledgeable about using herbs for their children’s health, even to help with medication. When deciding to give herbs, the most important thing is to make sure the herbs are safe for children. If you prepare it yourself, parents must really understand how to prepare the dosage safely and effectively, and also what combinations are good.

“If your knowledge is not sufficient, then use products that are already on the market that have BPOM distribution permits. At least their safety is guaranteed and usually we can feel their benefits and don’t forget to consult a doctor, especially a doctor who understands herbs, so that using herbs is safe and effective,” he said. Ingrid explained.
