That is the case of an 11-year-old Colombian migrant girl, who has become news throughout New York, after has obtained highlights participations in chess tournaments, despite not even having 1 year practicing it.

Her name is Mariangel Vargas; She arrived in New York a year ago. seeking security for herself and her family, who decided to emigrate to the United States, after the little girl’s mother was attacked by a pair of armed men when they were traveling in a taxi, and they threatened to take her life if they did not leave their home. country, because they were doing legal work for those displaced in the armed conflict in that nation.

The Vargas family first arrived in Mexico and crossed the border on foot to settle first in Texas and then moved by bus to New York, where they have been living in a shelter located in Midtown.

Mariangel began going to PS 11 in Chelsea, where she felt welcomed by the free bilingual programs offered by Russell Makofsky, a non-profit foundation, which included teaching chess.
