There are several species of crab that can be called mud crabs. One of them Scylla serrata.

There are four pairs of S. serrata legs. It is flat like an oar so it is more suitable for swimming than walking.

S. serrata also has front legs that have turned into large and strong scythes. The function of this scythe is mainly to grip prey or food and as a weapon to attack enemies or prey.

Carapace S. serrata oval shaped with a smooth surface. Carapace width S. serrata Adults can reach 25-28 cm. However, it is already difficult to find one of that size. Crabs that are commonly found in the wild are those with a carapace of around 15-20 cm.

The dorsal shell is yellowish green, grayish green, or blackish brown with a hint of red on the back.

The shape of the carapace is oval, the surface is smooth, and there are clearly visible H-shaped grooves. Carapace width on S. tranquebarica adults about 20 cm.

The color of the back shell is dark orange or brown, the abdomen is yellowish white, and the scallops are orange or red. This organ has a blue or green tinge.

On its swimming legs, carapace and scalloped arms there is a spotted pattern. However, this spotting pattern is not permanent.
