1766 Nikolai Mikhailovich KARAMZIN, Russian writer, historian. He introduced many new words into the Russian language – both neologisms (“charity”, “love”, “attraction”, “responsibility”, “industry”) and barbarisms (“sidewalk”, “coachman”). He was also one of the first to use the letter “е”. Once Karamzin visited France. Russian emigrants asked him:
– What, in a nutshell, is happening in your homeland?
Karamzin didn’t need two words.

1792 In Vienna, 22-year-old Ludwig van BEETHOVEN took his first lesson in musical composition from Franz Joseph HAYDN, paying the modern equivalent of 19 cents. Haydn said that such a student would not fail.
1925 The world’s first Motel opened in San Luis Obispo, California (USA). It gave the name to all small hotels whose rooms, for convenience, were entered from the street, directly from where the car was parked.
