Goes for more. Double down, at every step. In 2024, Novak Djokovic will go out in search of more records in tennis and without a doubt a key one will be the one that Roger Federer continues to hold for now, of being the oldest world No. 1 in the ATP ranking.
Always motivated and playing in a special way with that special pressure, the Serbian wants more glory. Current No. 1 in the international rankings, Djokovic is 36 years and six months old and aims for more. In 2023 he again played in all four Grand Slam finals of the season, winning in Australia, Roland Garros and the US Open and losing at Wimbledon, and achieved other sensational milestones.
A historic record was having finished his eighth year as leader of the world ranking, moving two ahead of retired American Pete Sampras. And looking ahead, in 2024, Djokovic will try to break the age record for a male at the top of the ATP.
Born in May 1987, the Belgrade right-hander is now No. 1 at 36 years and six months. In June 2018, Federer was the best on the world list for the last time, when he was 36 years and 10 months old. Therefore, next April the Serbian will try to appear as number one and beat that historical mark held by the Swiss, who retired in 2022.
This does not imply that Djokovic has to remain uninterruptedly as world No. 1 until that date, but that he will achieve it even if he is surpassed, if on that date or later he occupies the first place in the ATP ranking for at least another week.
Created in August 1973, the official ATP classification shows Djokovic as the man with the longest time on the throne, already with more than 400 weeks, which is also a general record, including women on the WTA list. For this reason, he is close to another memorable milestone, although he will continue to fight, especially against the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz and the Russian Daniil Medvedev to try to continue winning the main tournaments and not fall from the top.
The challenge, one more and very big one, is just around the corner. Therefore, 2024 means being able to make even more history.
