The Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR) canceled the meeting just a few hours after convening Tuesday’s extraordinary meeting of the executive committee, at which a new coach of the national team was supposed to be elected. She justified this by the high number of excuses from members of the executive committee due to health or work reasons. The meeting will not take place until the beginning of January, announced the press spokesman of the national team, Petr Šedivý.
According to the media, the 60-year-old Ivan Hašek should take charge of the national team, who already led the Czech national team in five matches as an interim coach in 2009, when he was also the head of the union.
The chairman of the FAČR, Petr Fousek, said last Thursday after a regular meeting of the executive committee that a decision regarding the new coach could be made this week. The longtime official stated that the process of selecting a coach is constantly moving forward. But he again refused to comment on the names of the candidates and their number.
The FAČR is choosing a coach after Jaroslav Šilhavý decided to quit after qualifying despite progressing to next year’s European Championship in Germany. His contract officially expired on November 30. In November, the day after the last qualifying match against Moldova in Olomouc, a five-member working group was entrusted with the selection of a new coach, in which chairman Fousek, vice-chairmen Jiří Šidliák and Jan Richter, member of the executive committee and head of the first league Viktoria Plzeň Adolf Šádek and the association’s new technical director Erich Brabec . The management of the FAČR also consults the coaching question with its advisory body, the Sports Council.
Hašek spent his most famous playing years in Sparta, as captain he led Czechoslovakia to the quarter-finals at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He also tried foreign engagements, playing in Strasbourg (1990-1994) and Japanese teams from Hiroshima (1995-1995) and Ichihara (1996). He ended his playing career at Letná, where he smoothly transitioned into a managerial and, in 1999, a coaching role. In 2005, Hašek unsuccessfully ran for the post of president of the football association, four years later he already won. In June 2011, however, he resigned after less than two years.
After leaving the head of Czech football, he returned to coaching work, as a coach he spent most of his time in foreign services, especially in Arab countries. He also led Strasbourg, Kobe and St. Étienne, Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Champions League under his leadership. He last coached the Lebanese national team from July 2021 to March 2022, but he failed to complete the task of reaching at least the play-offs for the World Cup in Qatar with the team.
In an interview with ČTK and Radiožurnál Sport in October, Hašek said that the chances of him leading the Czech national team are small, because, according to him, some people don’t want it. At the same time, he stated that after a break of more than a year, he already has a great desire to train again and expects an engagement abroad.
According to the media, former national team captain Pavel Nedvěd could be the manager of the national team. There is speculation about Vítězslav Laviček as another candidate for the coaching post. Bookmakers previously named the biggest favorites of the coach of Slovácko, Martin Svědík, and Pilsen, Miroslav Koubek.
At the Euro, which will take place from June 14 to July 14, the Czech national team will compete in a group with Portugal, Turkey and the winner of the March playoff C, which will be Georgia, Luxembourg, Greece, or Kazakhstan.
