He made Cult TV for Salto for over thirty years, he interviewed international music heroes and put the rough city behind people’s front doors on the map: Evert-jan Vonk. The creative maker passed away at the age of 71, today he was remembered by his supporters in blues café Maloe Melo: “The new generation can learn from him.”
‘The Giant of Amsterdam’, as many knew him, was known for his humor and good stories. These points also emerged in Maloe Melo. “Evert-jan was a remarkable person who I really looked up to,” said one of those present. “A wonderful person, who was very important to the city of Amsterdam.”
National and international stars
Vonk asked the questions of many big names for Cult TV. “Interviews with Chet Baker, Herman Brood and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. You name them, he interviewed them all.” But not only as a program maker did he get to see stars in front of the lens, he was also no stranger to stars from the international music world in his career as a photographer.
At the request of his family and friends, everyone was welcome in the blues café to pay his last respects. That call was listened to and the Maloe Melo was quite full this afternoon. “He was the biggest grouch in Amsterdam, but also the nicest.” Vonk was waved goodbye with a guard of honor after the commemoration.
In consultation with his family and friends, it was also decided to continue his Cult TV program at Salto.
