The CVC, with the support of the Mayor’s Office of Tuluá – through Sedama –, the Volunteer Fire Department, the National Police, the Co-management Committee of Lake Chilicote and the Samanea Foundation, carried out a control procedure for the heron of livestock in said body of water.
The work consisted of removing nests, eggs and chicks from the tree located in the center of the wetland.
According to biologist Juan Felipe Ortega, from the Semanea foundation, “the cattle heron is an invasive exotic species that is causing negative impacts on the ecosystem of Lake Chilicote, since the excrement contaminates the body of water. This species is not native to the area and reproduces in numbers, generates bad odors and transmits parasites that can make the community sick.”
For her part, biologist Rosa Alexandra Duque indicated that the eggs and chicks collected from the tree will be transferred to the San Emigdio Care and Assessment Center, in Palmira.
The control work carried out periodically on Lake Chilicote has decreased, in recent years, the presence of the bird in this wetland.
Through the Samanea Foundation, this year controls have been carried out in the region on invasive species such as the giant African snail, the bullfrog, the coquí frog, the cattle heron and the crazy ant, animals that generate conflicts in non-regional territories. not only environmental, but also social and economic.
